Support to Ninth European Conference on Turbomachinery – Fluid Dynamics and Thermodynamics, Istanbul, Turkey, 21-25 March 2011

Final Report Summary - EUROTURBO 9 (Support to ninth European conference on turbomachinery)

Executive summary:

Following the successful previous 8 conferences the 9th European turbomachinery conference (ETC) took place in Istanbul, Turkey, in 21-25 March 2011. ETC was held for the first time in a 'Country to be integrated in the future European Union'.

The ETC is the only scientific event within the European Union (EU) covering all fluid dynamics and thermodynamics aspects of turbomachinery design and operation. Its objectives are to enhance excellence in this field, to address and improve the technological level and competitiveness of turbomachinery design products and their operation as part of propulsion systems and energy conversion processes.

The ETC-9 conference was attended by many researchers, design engineers, users of turbomachinery components, as well as students and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) candidates allowing presentation and discussion of their most recent scientific results. The total number of participants was 284 which 110 were students among them.

EUROTURBO 9 fulfilled its goal to be a primary driver for technology transfer across Europe in this field through the presentation of the latest developments and best practices. It also enhanced cross-fertilisation among senior scientists working at the edge of turbomachinery technology and all users who intend to benefit from those progresses. So for young researchers it provided a forum in Europe by facilitating their access to recognised European scientists and research groups in the field of turbomachinery, and created a unique opportunity for young researchers to assess and evaluate their latest achievements. This conference also served as an integrating element between the western and eastern European countries and as an additional mean to foster collaboration in turbomachinery research at a European level. The conference was an ideal forum to relate and disseminate the results of research projects funded by the European Commission (EC) and benefits therefore also from the support by the Commission.

307 abstracts were evaluated in the abstract review meeting in Brussels on 23 April 2010. 291 abstracts were accepted and 174 papers were submitted for review. 65 review organisers under the guidance of the review organiser (partner 3) organised 522 reviews. On 26-27 November the ETC committee met in Istanbul for the final evaluation of the papers. 134 papers were finally accepted for the conference. The number of accepted papers increased 24 % compared to the last ETC conference in Gras. 14 papers were suggested for journal publication and 49 papers had at least one author from industry. Regarding the affiliation of the authors, 18 % came from industry (16 % at ETC8 Gras conference), 66 % from academia and 16 % from research centres. More details and statistical data can be found in annex 2. ETC committee selected a paper and delivered to the author the 'ETC Best Paper Award' as a recognition of excellence amongst Journal quality papers.

The papers were presented in 36 sessions and published in the conference proceedings (ISBN 978-975-561-389-5), as well as on a CD-ROM which were given to all attendee. The papers will be published on the ETC website for free download to increase the dissemination of scientific results.

Three invited lectures were held by representatives from industry and universities. Each session was chaired by a 'Session Chairman' chosen amongst the ETC committee members, review organisers and representatives from the European turbomachinery industry. All information concerning the conference was communicated in the final conference programme presented in annex 1.

During the conference, two meetings were organised for the ETC committee members, in order to discuss the evaluation of the present conference, the venue of the next conference, the other matters concerning the ETC's present and future activities.

Project context and objectives:

The objective of the project was the support for the participation to the success of the 9th European conference on turbomachinery - fluid dynamics and thermodynamics, Istanbul, Turkey, 21-25 March 2011.

EUROTURBO 9 was the ninth in a series of bi-annual conferences started for the first time in 1995 in Erlangen (Germany). Following the successful first eight conferences on turbomachinery held in Erlangen (Germany) 1995, in Antwerpen (Belgium) 1997, in London (United Kingdom) 1999, in Florence (Italy) 2001, in Prague (Czech Republic) 2003, in Lille (France) 2005, in Athens (Greece) 2007, in Gras (Austria) 2009, the ninth took place in Istanbul (Turkey). ETC was held for the first time in a 'Country to be integrated in the future - EU'.

The conference is primary interest to research workers, design engineers and users of turbomachinery. EUROTURBO 9 was intended to be a primary event for technology transfer across Europe in this field through the presentation of the latest developments and best practice. The driving force for the organisation was the explicit wish expressed by several European engineering organisations (becoming associated engineering organisations which are presented in the conference programme), in order to:

1. replace the various national turbomachinery conferences taking place in Europe by one single major event providing a broader basis for scientific exchange within the European turbomachinery community and a move towards European scientific and technological integration;
2. provide a European forum for presenting generally all results of turbomachinery research obtained within Europe, but also those obtained in programmes funded by the EC;
3. improve the cross-fertilisation level between leading technologies (such as those present in aeronautics) and less advanced technologies present in other fields of application and more generally, the transfer of technology from a national level to a European one;
4. create a European high level turbomachinery conference differing in scope, size and organisation from the other extra-European conferences, such as those organised by the American ASME, or the Japanese JSME;
5. provide a forum for young researchers in Europe by facilitating their access to recognised European scientists and research groups in the field of turbomachinery; and
6. create a unique opportunity for young researchers to assess and evaluate their latest achievements;
7. create a stable high level scientific event to support the Turbomachinery and energy conversion system industries by addressing their research development difficulties and needs.

The ETC is the only scientific event within the EU covering in depth all fluid dynamics and thermodynamics aspects of turbomachinery design and operation. Its objectives are to enhance excellence in this field, to address and improve the technological level and competitiveness of turbomachinery design products and their operation as part of propulsion systems and energy conversion processes.

Based on a rigorous review process, the conference organisers guarantee a high scientific quality attracting and stimulating thereby the best European intellectual capability in the field of propulsion systems and energy conversion processes. Through the presentation of the latest developments and best practice, the conference is intended to be a primary event for technology transfer across Europe. It is acting, also, as an integrating element between the existing and the newly integrated countries in the EU, as well as those to be integrated in the future and provided an ideal forum for promoting and disseminating results of turbomachinery research funded by the EC. Regarding the ETC9 conference in Istanbul, 29 papers acknowledged funding by the EU. The number of accepted papers was 134 which increased by 24 % with respect to the preceding conference in Gras (2009). A high quality standard was maintained as 23 % of the papers submitted for review were rejected. The best 11 papers was published in the Journal of Power and Energy (IMechE), Volume 225 Issue 7 November 2011 with ISSN 0957-6509.

EUROTURBO 9 was of interest to researchers, design engineers and users of turbomachines. The local organising committee decided to apply a special registration fee policy to attract the all researchers and students from EU - Newly industrialised countries (NIC)s and EU-CIF countries. Reduced fees for students from all over Europe, for all participants from the newly integrated countries and those to be integrated in the future in the EU and no fee for the students and presenters coming from these newly integrated countries and those to be integrated in the EU made this conference a prime event for European integration in the field of turbomachinery (fluid dynamics and thermodynamics).

The total number of participants were 284 110 of which were students and young researchers. The importance of the conference for European cooperation in the field of turbomachinery was demonstrated by some statistical data from the EUROTURBO 9 in annex 13.

The bulk of the contributions stems from two EU countries (Germany and Italy). There are also significant contributions from Poland, Switzerland. The contribution from Turkey, Spain and Czech Republic are noted. The data also show in which countries special efforts are needed to initiate more contributions.

Tables show the distribution of the papers with at least one author from industry, the papers acknowledging support from the EU and affiliation of all authors. A large increase of industrial involvement was noted in Istanbul with 47 % increase with respect to ETC8 in Gras. The number of papers (29 papers) acknowledging support from the EU clearly demonstrates the visibility and dissemination potential offered to the EU projects by the ETC.

The distribution of accepted papers based on 'affiliation of all authors referring their sector - EUROTURBO 9 Istanbul', 84 authors from Industry, 314 from universities and 79 from research centres. If the all authors' affiliation are classified regarding the Industry and EU implication, 49 papers with at least one author from industry and 29 papers acknowledging EU support.

The presentations at the EUROTURBO 9 conference described new experimental, numerical and / or theoretical work emphasising the contribution to theory, design methods and optimisation, reliability and operability. For example, the latest developments in blade design and optimisation, three-dimensional methods, unsteady flows, heat transfer, aero-elasticity, noise and two phase flows will be of prime interest. Consistent with the objective of European technology exchange, the EC has in the past strongly encouraged researchers involved in programmes funded by the EC to take this excellent opportunity to present papers demonstrating the technical progress of their projects.

Compared to the previous successful conferences, EUROTURBO 9 achieved to further improve its impact by the following measures:

1. Dissemination of newest turbomachinery knowledge not only by publishing high-quality papers in journals and conference proceedings but by providing all papers for a free of charge, but registered, download within a year after the conference.
2. Actions for the harmonisation of the dissemination of scientific knowledge in the field of aeronautics in cooperation with other European associations (ERCOFTAC, ECCOMAS, CEAS, EUCAS and EUROMECH) within the frame of the E-CAERO EU project.
3. Additional dissemination of the 'Call for Papers' using the national contact points from EU to increase the visibility of the conference. Thus ETC9 attracted 34 % more abstracts than ETC8 in 2009.
4. Special efforts to secure the dissemination in countries which do not have a representative in the organising committee.

Young researchers mostly enter the stimulating and promising field of turbomachinery with their diploma or PhD work. At this phase they are generally guided by their supervisors but their access to the most advanced research groups in turbomachinery is relatively limited. Personal contacts with recognised experts in turbomachinery and exchange / share of knowledge with them will substantially support their work and boost their scientific career.

ETC-9, as the main scientific event on turbomachinery within the EU, offered this chance to young researchers. This conference supported the participation of undergraduate, Master, Diploma and PhD students by reduced fees, with 'no-fee' for students from the newly integrated countries and the countries to be integrated in the future.

During the conference the young researchers presented their results, thus initiated a scientific discussion on their work with European experts who gave them valuable feedback. In addition, as conference participants, they also had the opportunity to contribute more generally to scientific discussions. The social events of a conference (coffee breaks, welcome reception, conference dinner, technical excursions) were the best opportunities to get better acquainted with experts and to acquire additional background knowledge (annex 2).

The European turbomachinery committee is one of the partners (together with ECCOMAS, ERCOFTAC, CEAS, EUCAS and EUROMECH) looking at a more integrated vision and coordination of European research dissemination in the field of theoretical, numerical and experimental fluid mechanics; this is one of the purposes of the E-CAERO project. In this context, contacts have been initiated with these organisations to promote the ETC-9 conference. It is however clear that EUROTURBO 9 has no overlap with the proposal submitted by the different partners mentioned above. The organisation process of ETC-9 started in December 2009 with the preparation and distribution of the call for abstracts / papers (annex 1).

ETC committee selected a paper and delivered to the author the 'ETC best paper award' as recognition of excellence among Journal quality papers (annex 12) and to acknowledge authors' contribution in terms of fundamentals and / or applied research in fluid dynamics and thermodynamics of turbomachnery. The 'Top 5' papers were re-evaluated by a sub-committee of five members of the ETC committee. The selected paper was entitled 'Active flow control at a 1.5 stage low-speed research compressor with varying rotor tip clearance'. The leading author is M.Kunselmann who is a young researcher as a PhD student, honoured by the conference Chairman with a plate (annex 12).

The papers were presented in 36 sessions and published in the conference proceedings with ISBN 978-975-561-389-5 (annex 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8), as well as on a CD-ROM (annex 9) which were given to all attendees. The papers will be published on the ETC website for free download to increase the dissemination of scientific results.

Some space (booths) was available near the session rooms where leading companies and research agencies to report on their products and activities.

Two technical tours were organised on Friday afternoon:

Tour 1

- Visit of Turkish Engine Centre (TEC). Turkish Engine Centre ('TEC') is a joint venture between Pratt & Whitney and Turkish Technic for the maintenance overhaul and repair of CFM56® and V2500® engines. TEC is located at Istanbul's 2nd international airport Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) on the Anatolian (Asian) part.

Free transportation were provided by the local organisation committee and announced at the conference.

Tour 2

- Visit of the laboratories of Istanbul Technical University, hosting ETC9.

The scope of the conference was announced at the ETC Secreteriat and ETC9 local committee web sites. 1 500 flyers of 'Call for papers' (annex 1) were distributed through the ETC committee members and other related institutions and colleagues. The conference announcement was also made by e-mail messages.

The scope of the conference covers from a scientific and engineering perspective, the fluid dynamics and thermodynamics involved in improving the performance, stability and sustainability characteristics in the design, development and operation of axial, mixed flow and radial turbomachines:

- aero-jet engines;
- aviation and industrial gas turbines;
- steam turbines;
- compressors and fans;
- hydraulic turbines and pumps;
- non-conventional turbines (wind, Wells, Arrhenius).

Particular emphasis will be given to the following areas:

- aerodynamic and hydrodynamic flows;
- turbulent and transitional flows;
- two phase and wet steam flows;
- particle paths, deposition and erosion effects;
- real working fluid flows;

- thermodynamics, heat transfer, cooling and leakage;
- heat transfer and turbine cooling;
- turbine internal and external (film) cooling flows and losses;
- the effects of rotation, unsteadiness and temperature non uniformities;
- leakage and sealing flows;

- unsteady Flows and Interactions;
- surge, stall and transients;
- rotor-stator interactions and multi-row effects;
- vibration, forced response, flutter and aero-elasticity;
- separation and cavitation;
- aero-acoustics, noise generation and reduction.

- turbomachinery design, performance and operation;
- design, analysis and optimisation;
- performance predictions;
- active and passive flow control, including Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS);
- testing, measurement techniques and experimental validation;
- operational experience and performance monitoring;
- diagnostics, deterioration and residual performance / life prediction.

Potential impact:

The bi-annual ETC conference has direct scientific and engineering impact on the 'fluid dynamics and thermodynamics involved in improving the performance, stability and sustainability characteristics in the design, development and operation of axial, mixed flow and radial turbomachines to the turbomachinery', significant on the industrial research, some indirect impact on citizens through better turbomachinery (better efficiency, reliability, operation, environmental aspects) use in the fields of energy conversion technologies and transportation.

Attending the event provides a unique access to a formidable concentration of top level scientists in the field. The outcome of the forum was appreciated and accessed as well through several channels. http://www.euroturbo.eu a website which is being developed and updated continuously in view of its relevance as dissemination tool.

The ETC 9 conference intended and realised to further improve its impact by some particular measures, such as:

- dissemination of newest turbomachinery knowledge not only by publishing high-quality papers in journals and conference proceedings but by providing all papers for a free of charge, but registered, download within a year after the conference;
- actions for the harmonisation of the dissemination of scientific knowledge in the field of aeronautics in cooperation with other European associations (ERCOFTAC, ECCOMAS, CEAS, EUCAS and EUROMECH) within the frame of the E-CAERO EU project;
- additional dissemination of the 'Call for papers' using the national contact points from EU to increase the visibility of the conference and thus to attract a few more abstracts (the first time three papers presented from Turkey);
- special efforts to secure the dissemination in countries which do not have a representative in the organising committee.

The dissemination of the results are:

- proceedings' hard copy (330 copies are printed, given to the all participants and distributed through the some national and international institutions);
- CD of proceedings;
- publication of selected 11 papers in the Journal of Power and Energy, IMechE);
- free download of the proceedings from ETC website will be available in 2012.
