This glossary represents an amalgamation of the original thoughts and work of many people and organisations. These have been brought together after an extensive search of the relevant CCS and related literature for glossary entries and definitions; accessing the growing number of partial and often very subject specific glossaries that already exist across the worldwide web (web addresses can be found at the end of the glossary). A consultation with ECO2 scientists, other members, and science advisory board members has elicited useful comments and suggestions, which have also been embraced into this document.Result type

Carbon dioxide (CO2) has been stored below the seabed off Norway for almost two decades. ECO2 identified a rich variety of geological structures in these storage areas that probably served as conduits for gas release in the geological past and located a seabed fracture and several seeps and abandoned wells where natural gas and formation water are released into the marine environment. Even though leakage may occur if these structures are not avoided during site selection, the footprint at the seabed where organisms would be impacted by CO2 is small for realistic leakage scenarios.Result type

The proposed monitoring strategy is organized around a suite of surveys covering the entire area above the storage formation. Additional targeted studies have to be conducted if active seeps and pockmarks occur at the seabed to determine emission rates of gases and fluids and exclude that seepage is invigorated by the storage operation. All measurements being part of the monitoring program need to be performed during the baseline study prior to the onset of the storage operation to assess the spatial and temporal variability of leakage-related parameters.Result type

With interviews and focus groups, new data have been produced within this project to better understand the challenges that the public meets when learning about the geological storage of CO2 and the role that European-level authorities have given it, with regard to the future of the energy system, for achieving a low carbon society. Why is this? What is really underpinning the status of public perception of CCS in Europe and of the geological storage part in particular?Result type

Marine resources in the studied area are described and a site-specific environmental value for each highlighted resource is assessed. Subsequently, potential leak features are identified and the size of the affected seafloor is estimated. Overlay analysis between the affected area and the identified valuable resources reveal the consequences of leakage. Bayesian methods are applied to determine a propensity-to-leak factor. The environmental risk is finally assessed as product of consequences and propensity of leakage. This novel approach was tested and applied at Sleipner.Result type
