The physics of flavor in visible and dark sectors

Objetivo

The topic of this proposal are two major open problems of high energy physics: the origin of flavor structure in the Standard Model and beyond, and the nature of Dark Matter (DM). We will (i) investigate the implications of flavor symmetries at future low energy machines and at CERN LHC, and (ii) develop a model independent description of direct DM searches and explore their relevance for astrophysical and collider signatures of DM. As part of the project we propose to implement General Minimal Flavor Violation in Minimal Superymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), calculate the renormalization group (RG) equations and discuss experimental consequences. We will explore how to extend the spurion analysis to the leptonic sector, e.g. for the description of deviations from tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing. In the course of the project we will also construct Effective Field Theory (EFT) operator basis for DM-nucleus scattering, and calculate the RG evolution. The Wilson coefficients will be constrained by fitting to the experimental data. We will perform matching calculations for representative DM models and show which representative DM models have LHC implications. The project will go well beyond the present 'state of the art' in the research field. As the end result of the first part of the project one may be able to describe consequences of supersymmetry breaking even when flavor symmetry is realized nonperturbatively. The second part of the project will lead to a much more efficient translation between experimental results and the theory space in DM models. For instance, after completion of this project in DM models with scalar exchanges only a tree level calculation will be needed instead of a 2-loop one in order to compare to data. In a few years, when the limits on DM scattering will be reduced by an additional order of magnitude, a model independent relation between direct detection and indirect astrophysical signature of DM annihilation will be possible.
