Exploitation of the connections from X-ray binaries to active galactic nuclei

Objective

Accretion onto compact objects and the associated jets seem to be ubiquitous in our Universe and also play an important role in the regulation of the growth of galaxies. One can study this accretion process well in the stellar case: X-ray binaries (XRBs) are nearby and have well observable outburst timescales. In his previous Marie Curie fellowship the applicant developed and refined scaling relations between these stellar cases and the supermassive black holes in the centres of galaxies (active galactic nuclei – AGN). In the current project these scaling relations should be used to scale properties of XRBs to AGN to study the feedback phenomenon regulating the growth of galaxies. Concretely, we propose to refine the empirical models for accretion and to apply them to AGN by measuring and modelling galaxy luminosity functions. In the present proposal we suggest to fund a visitor programme and some travelling funds to connect the different European institutes leading the research on compact objects.
