Enabling advanced pre-combustion capture techniques and plants

Final Report Summary - DECARBIT (Enabling advanced pre-combustion capture techniques and plants)

Executive Summary:
FINAL PUBLISHABLE SUMMARY
DECARBit responds to the current call by performing research, development and piloting of advanced pre-combustion CO2 capture technologies which will substantially reduce emissions of greenhouse gases from fossil fuel power plants. This can be accomplished by aiming for highly efficient and cost-effective power generation plants with near zero emissions, i.e. highest feasible capture rate.
The main objective of DECARBit is to achieve cost reduced pre-combustion capture of CO2 promoting the development and deployment of large scale CCS plants (10-12 by 2020). Further industrial uptake was strengthened through an Industrial Contact Group established within the project framework. One important sub-goal was to strengthen the competitiveness of European industry and economy by reinforcing a leading position in CCS technologies as well as exploring the potential impacts for other energy-intensive industries. DECARBit aims to reduce the cost of CO2 capture from large power generation plants possibly down to 15 euros per ton captured.
DECARBit was initiated 1st January 2008, and in December 2012 the fourth reporting period was extended from month 48 to month 54. Public publications can be found at the DECARBit website: www.decarbit.com
