Structuring the European Research Area within Quantum Information Science and Technology

Objective

Quantum Information Science and Technology (QIST) is an area of research and development that will become very important for future applications for information and communication technologies. At the moment most activities are focused on basic research in universities. To maintain and develop competitiveness within this field in comparison to other research areas enhanced structuring and co-ordination of efforts on European level are necessary.

The ERA-Pilot QIST will contribute to fostering European research and development within QIST by investigating the status quo, by identifying the potential for co-operation between research groups, by giving recommendations to funding-institutions on the national and European level for future research and funding policy, and by suggesting clustering in the form of regional or thematic centres of excellence. Moreover the ERA-Pilot QIST will elaborate proposals for a future infrastructure that will allow a sustainable development of the progress achieved in the course of the ERA-Pilot.

In addition the project will promote the QIST-community in Europe by contributing to the structuring of the community and by measures to improve communication and collaboration between the respective groups. At the moment there is very limited collaboration between QIST-scientists and industry. Nevertheless a strong QIST-network ready for future industrial applications requires the involvement of relevant industry as well. Therefore the ERA-Pilot QIST will establish an early dialogue between science, policy, and industry in order to develop a common vision about the future of QIST in Europe. Generally accepted guidelines for future activities within the field of QIST will be developed that will support national and European institutions in co-ordinating their research and funding policy.
