operAtional seNsing lifE technologies for maRIne ecosystemS

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - ANERIS (operAtional seNsing lifE technologies for maRIne ecosystemS)

Période du rapport: 2023-01-01 au 2023-12-31

ANERIS main concept: Towards a network of Operational Marine Biology (OMB)
ANERIS proposes to implement the concept of Operational Marine Biology (OMB), understood as a biodiversity information system for systematic and long-term routine measurements of the ocean and coastal life, and their rapid interpretation and dissemination
ANERIS proposes to develop the next generation of scientific instrumentation tools and methods for sensing marine-life. The design of the new instruments and methods will integrate different types of marine life-sensing technologies: genomics, imaging-biooptics and participatory sciences.
These technologies will be implemented in a co-design framework, involving all the interested stakeholders: academia, industry, civil society and government. The technologies will be tested and validated in different case studies, involving the ANERIS innovations, commercial instruments to be improved and different world-class research infrastructures (RI).
The project will develop a training program for the operation and use of these new solutions for all the involved stakeholders and particularly the research infrastructures staff.
Overall, the project proposes to benefit all the actors involved in the quintuple helix framework of innovation, promoting innovation and knowledge sharing among them: (1) the academy with new life-sensing technologies to use in research; (2) the industry with new technologies and methods to exploit; (3) the governments, with improved observational systems and data products to be used in environmental management directives; (4) the civil society, empowered through the proposed participative technologies and large collaborative networks and (5) the Research Infrastructures, integrating new generation of sensing instruments and methods, and their staff being trained on those new technologies.
The ANERIS objectives in the 1st reporting period per WP can be summarised as:

WP1
Set the basis for the optimal and transparent project evolution.
Track the project outcomes (deliverables, milestones and periodic scientific and financial reports) to ensure proper compliance.
WP2
First steps of the co-designing and co-developing new technological solutions and data products for Operational Marine Biology (OMB)
Strategy on how to implementing a dedicated training program of OMB-technologies, with particular focus on the staff linked to the involved RI
Theoretical design for enabling edge-to-cloud integration for data-driven OMB workflows, including dedicated services of AI based automatization for data processing and quality control
WP3:
Co-designing and developing software algorithms to process imagery acquired by various camera platforms- two algorithms were developed, one for multiple image systems, and one for single image inputs.
Testing developed algorithms on the imagery obtained from the different imaging and bio-optic systems
WP4:
Co-designing the new functionalities of the WP4 technologies (D4.1 D4.2)
Initial establishment of OMB products, in particular those related to early detection monitoring for invasive alien species or those focused on monitoring species under threat.
Specific training sessions to the participatory partners and new collaborations to increase marine data acquisition, increasing the participatory network in ANERIS. (D4.4)
Establish the different workflows of the data in the ANERIS computational infrastructure (M13)
Working in the implementation of the AI assessment in the validation (D4.3)
Quality control of the participatory data to be included in the OMB products and uploaded into global repositories such as GBIF.
WP5:
Develop integrated hardware and software architecture that provides ANERIS with a hybrid computing continuum.
Allocate and deliver computational and storage resources essential for managing ANERIS data and pipelines across various case studies.
Assemble the system utilizing the EGI cloud federation and the necessary procurements to support ANERIS technologies and their users.
Employ best engineering practices to support ANERIS technology development and operation.
Implement cybersecurity measures and establish redundancy and backup for business continuity and disaster recovery.
Deploy and evaluate prototypes of ANERIS technologies in real scenarios, ensuring their maintenance and operational integrity.
WP6:
Development of the project’s branding and website (D6.2).
Development of the social media channels,
Development of the plan for communication & dissemination of results (PECD) (D6.1) and
Development of the plan for Еxploitation and Sustainability (D6.3)
Proactive and timely publication of project outputs, news and accomplishments from the other work packages,
Establishment of an engaged community around ANERIS.
We are preparing the different ANERIS technologies, that we plan to start testing in the different use cases in the next reporting period
