Descrizione del progetto
Open development platforms for software and services
Database management systems are at the core of information systems supporting a wide range of economic, social, and public administration activities. The current thrust for an information society translates at a technological level in additional demand for database management systems (DBMSs). Specifically, trusting technology in an information society calls for high availability and prompt disaster recovery. This makes database replication a key technology for the long-term competitiveness of todays businesses. Replication is however challenged by the integration of legacy systems, the performance in wide-area and large systems and by the cost of database management systems supporting replication, especially, when many businesses are using cost-effective open-source databases. The GORDA project aims at (i) promoting the interoperability of DBMSs and replication protocols by defining generic architecture and interfaces that can be standardized; (ii) providing general purpose and widely-applicable database replication protocols based on group communication for large-scale database systems; and (iii) providing uniform techniques and tools for managing secure and heterogeneous replicated database systems. The consortium will draw on their previous experience to achieve a generic and efficient design as well as to deliver implementations of the various components of the system. The consortium will make all interfaces open and actively work, to foster the adoption of the interfaces, and of the resulting generic replication middleware, by different database and middleware providers.
