Third Micro B3 Industry Expert Workshop

This workshop, “Collaboration between Academia, SMEs, and Industry-Transforming Inventions into Innovations in the fields", held at the Royal Flemish Academy for Science and the Arts (Brussels, Belgium) on 3rd November 2015, addresses the relevance of collaboration between the public and the private sector and their corresponding strategies in order to create synergies and promote technology transfer with a specific focus on innovative approaches in bioinformatics and (marine) biotechnology.

3 November 2015 - 3 November 2015
Belgium
One of the primary aims of the 7th Framework Programme of the European Commission was to foster science-based European competitiveness with a focus on addressing major needs in society, as defined by the Priority Themes of the Programme. This is realized by bringing together academia, SMEs, and industry within integrated international projects to facilitate the translation of research results into commercially viable products and services. The importance of this aspect is even more emphasized by the new Horizon 2020 programme in which the role of industry is further strengthened.

This third Micro B3 Industry Expert Workshop brings together managers of various backgrounds and from both within and outside of the Micro B3 consortium to illuminate different strategies for knowledge and technology transfer between the public and private sector and corresponding experiences, based on use cases in bioinformatics and (marine) biotechnology. Examples are shown on how EU-funded collaboration can be used to gain access to external expertise and technology, and to broaden the view, also alternative strategies which are not directly linked to EU projects are included. The different perspectives will be discussed, as well as the pros and cons of such collaborations. The workshop targets a diverse audience interested in getting an overview and new impulses on ways to foster the transformation of inventions into innovations, based on collaboration between the public and private sector within Europe.

The workshop is part of a series of stakeholder events, organized in the context of the EU FP7 project Micro B3 (Marine Microbial Biodiversity, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology) which targets the development of innovative approaches in bioinformatics and a legal framework to make accessible large-scale data on marine genomes and metagenomes for ecosystems biology and the definition of new biotechnological targets.
