A new era for science in society
ʹScience in Societyʹ (SIS) is a Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) area concerned with building a knowledge-based society in Europe. It encourages reflection and debate about the role of science and technology in society and culture. As part of the Eurosis project, infrastructure and best practices were established for the SIS National Contact Points (NCPs) across Europe. This means that SIS NCPs are now better equipped to provide quality services to organisations in the EU and other countries. Training, networking and capacity-building events transferred the necessary skills to NCPs and informed the ʹGuidelines for SIS NCP's in FP7ʹ and ʹBest Practice Bookʹ publications. A core achievement was also the creation of an information hub for stakeholders, known as the Eurosis Knowledge Management Tool. In addition, national and global maps were produced to give NCPs an overview of SIS patterns in Europe. These maps show which communities are most represented and most active in the SIS dialogue, and will help to consolidate the SIS community. The now completed Eurosis project has ushered in a new era for Science in Society. This robust network is set to strengthen SIS activities amid the growing global culture of research and innovation.
