Green Hydrogen Systems’ X-Series electrolyser prototype reaches technical milestone

Marking a major advancement in green hydrogen production, EU-backed clean tech company Green Hydrogen Systems’ X-Series electrolyser prototype achieves technical proof of concept.

EU-funded GreenHyScale project partner Green Hydrogen Systems, Denmark, has achieved technical proof of concept for its X-Series electrolyser prototype. This achievement is an important milestone in the company’s goal to realise large-scale deployment of onshore and offshore electrolysis in line with the EU’s strategy to decarbonise hydrogen production and expand its use in replacing fossil fuels.

A pivotal step

The technical proof of concept was attained following many months of commissioning and testing, resulting in third-party validation of the prototype’s performance. This is a crucial step along the path to full commercialisation of the X-Series electrolyser module and sets the stage for the technology’s market launch in 2025. “I am very pleased to announce that we have reached a major milestone with the performance validation of our X-Series prototype. Reaching this milestone has required intense team effort from across our entire organisation and close collaboration with our on-site partners in Skive,” reports Green Hydrogen Systems CEO Peter Friis in a news item posted on the clean tech company’s website. The prototype was tested at the green industrial park of GreenLab Skive, the GreenHyScale project coordinator. Friis goes on to say: “The third-party validation proves our technical concept for the X-Series. This confirmation allows us to take the next step of our growth strategy, as we expect the X-Series to be the main revenue driver from 2025 onwards.” The X-Series prototype tested over several months in Skive, Denmark, as part of the GreenHyScale project is a 6 MW pressurised alkaline electrolyser module designed for medium-to-large-scale hydrogen plants. The technology offers better efficiency and scalability than current solutions. The 70-tonne electrolyser is the first piece of a 100 MW green electrolysis plant that will be built and operated at the industrial park. Green Hydrogen Systems describes its current and subsequent plans in the news item: “Following the technical proof of concept milestone, Green Hydrogen Systems will continue the prototype testing, focusing on system reliability before entering into commercial agreements. Green Hydrogen Systems is engaged in dialogue with potential customers regarding the first Mark 1.0 versions and aims for first deliveries in late 2024 and early 2025.” The GreenHyScale (100 MW Green hydrogen production in a replicable and scalable industrial hosting environment) project aspires to create a replicable hydrogen production solution for companies in both Denmark and the rest of Europe. Through its technologies, it aims to lower the cost of hydrogen and reduce the footprint of land-based and offshore electrolysers, in this way helping to accelerate Europe’s path to carbon neutrality by 2050.
