Seamless panoramic video surveillance in any environment
A cost effective, fast-to-deploy, flexible video surveillance system has been developed thanks to EU funding. The CHAMELEON video surveillance system automatically combines images from multiple cameras with overlapping regions, to create a natural seamless 180° panoramic view of the monitored area. The innovation has huge potential in a number of applications such as remote monitoring, border control, temporary exhibitions and events and transport. Office and residential buildings could also benefit. CHAMELEON also offers interesting possibilities for off-grid powered security surveillance systems in remote areas and in and harsh environments, such as construction. CHAMELEON will also improve the working conditions of security camera supervisors, who often experience stress, boredom and lack of concentration due to information overload. The project began by demonstrating how a cost-effective and self-configurable video surveillance system could construct a natural 180-degree panoramic view of a monitored area. The unit combines video streams from 3 CCTV cameras and allows portable devices such as smart phones and tablets to stream and display the stitched video feed in real-time. This flexible system was then designed to be easily installed in both a wired and wireless environment, depending on application requirements. The development of a low-power video-stitching unit was then constructed and located at the camera site. By using a very low power and light-weight video compression algorithm with low bit rates, the system is ideal for temporary monitoring. And by combining images from multiple cameras with overlapping regions to create a natural seamless panoramic view, the quality of CCTV video display has been improved. The system uses secure and high speed wireless technology to stream video information to authorised users. It includes two layers of security protocols, along with authentication at the network layer. General feedback from global video surveillance buyers has been positive. CHAMELEON was represented by Malta Industrial Innovations for SMEs (MIIS) at the IFSEC Security Fair in Birmingham, UK in May 2013, and was reviewed favourably in terms of price, target application, modularity, installation practice and software use. The CHAMELEON project began in January 2012 and was completed at the end of 2013. It received EUR 785 893 in funding from the EU's Seventh Framework Programme.
