Through thematic seminars, exchange of data and expertise and joint publications the current network produces new information about processes leading to burden of disease, in particular, disability in old age. The network will exploit existing data resources and explore the gaps in understanding the disablement process in old age. The interdisciplinary perspectives include physiogical changes associated with increased vulnerability to disability, hereditary vs. environmental components and gender differences in disablement process, and life-span perspective on disablement and mortality. Also determinants of the consequences of a disease on individuals need to be addressed, such as life-style issues, gender aspects and social and psychological issues. The network consists of established cross-sectional studies with newest available methodology (hypothesis-building analyses) and longitudinal studies (hypothesis testing in prospective analyses).
