Developing a european facility to re-use seismic data

CORDIS oferuje możliwość skorzystania z odnośników do publicznie dostępnych publikacji i rezultatów projektów realizowanych w ramach programów ramowych HORYZONT.

The project developed a tool that allows conversion of a TIF image of a seismic record section into SEG-Y format for academic users where commercial options are not feasible. Access to this is provided, with free training, in order to instigate long-term archive and re-use strategies within European marine research centres. This software module was developed as a technology transfer with a SME, Caldera Graphics.
13000 A0 images of seismic records created by the project are managed by the Caldera Graphics 'Collection' database system distributed between Southampton and Strasbourg. Each identical structured database contains a reference to CD library images and a browsing thumbnail library. The thumbnail images and mid-resolution images of each scanned seismic section is copied to a web viewer at http:/www.soc.soton.ac.uk/SEISCANEX & http://cats.u-strasbg.fr/seiscanex.html These thumbnails can be browsed using a basic search engine to aid dissemination of knowledge of their existence and to realise new value. The web viewers will remain supported for the foreseeable future.
The SEISCANEX distributed facility is unique in providing free to use scanning and archiving. It was essential that facility users were introduced to the archive structure so that they could make effective decisions on how to handle their data on return to their host institutions. In addition a project objective was to enable users to convert their seismic images into digital seismic files for re-use and processing. To this end the project designed 3 training schedules and documentation: 1. Introduction to UNIX & GMT for beginners, 2. Image management and archive, 3. SeisTrans data conversion. These training sessions were offered freely with supporting funds for non and new EU member users. They were intended as a prelude to a user purchasing a software licence for installation at their home institution. 2 licences were sold: University of Ghent Russia. A total of 36 training sessions were run by the partners.
