WaysTUP! the project will showcase a portfolio of new ‘urban biowaste to biobased products’ processes starting from different feedstocks i.e. fish and meat waste, spent coffee grounds, household source separated biowaste, used cooking oils, cellulosic waste derived from municipal wastewater, and waste treatment plants, and sewage sludge. The project also aims to improve citizens’ perception of urban biowaste as a local resource and consumer acceptance of urban biowaste-derived products. At the same time, new profitable business models will be developed, and policy changes will be promoted to public authorities.
This technical report presents the progress of the project up to month 36, including the status of the pilots and the work done for each of the work packages.
At this stage, all the demonstration pilots are fully operational, all have been monitored and the first results of their operation have been achieved, which are included in deliverables 3.2 to 3.8.
All different types of municipal biowaste to be used as feedstock for bio-based products within WaysTUP have been characterised. In particular, samples of meat waste, fish waste, coffee waste, source-separated biowaste, used cooking oils, coffee oil from used coffee grounds, cellulosic rejects and cardboard and paper waste from municipal solid waste, sewage sludge, olive oil mill waste, compost, and sawdust were collected and analysed. All pilots are in the process of improving their treatment technologies, focusing on optimisation. Furthermore, all seven Pilots have obtained end products from the different bio-waste valorisation processes.
In the framework of WP1, the tasks continued to run smoothly, with the aim to enrich the catalog of municipal biowaste valorisation solutions and good practice examples developed during the first period. The first review of existing barriers related to the valorisation of municipal biowaste for bio-based products was described in deliverable D1.4. The final results will be delivered in the final report of WP1.
The results of the scope of the behavior change campaign were described in deliverable D4.1. It details the desk research that was carried out to theoretically map the behaviors involved in the WaysTUP behavior change strategy, namely the selective sorting of bio-waste and the acceptance of bio-based products and their main determinants. The deliverable D4.2 with the details of the process of co-creation of a toolkit for the WaysTUP! behavior change strategy was submitted, in the first period and during period II The task, T4.3 "Implementation of change interventions" is still ongoing and reports results in D4.3 "Local engagement plans", The second task, T4.4 "Monitoring and understanding of behavioral dynamics towards recycling of bio-waste and by-products" is also ongoing.
In WP5, the interim assessment of the project's technical achievements and practical barriers, the characterization of the final products, and the safety assessment were carried out, as well as the assessment of the environmental and economic performance of the developed process through LCA analysis, and the interim assessment of the regulatory aspects related to the new value chains of municipal biowaste.
In WP6 the main results include the preparation and submission of D6.5 IPR Strategy Report, 2nd version, as well as the preparation and submission of D6.3 Individual Business and Marketing strategies. Within D6.3 16 business models and 16 business and marketing strategies have been successfully developed for the above-mentioned Project Partners. The assessment of the policy framework concerning the valorisation of municipal bio-waste at EU, national, regional, and local levels is carrying out a baseline analysis and providing a global overview. The work carried out under T7.1 has contributed to supporting the successful incorporation of innovative integrated urban valorisation approaches into existing and future EU, national, and local policies. In the framework of the task activities, some of the Task 7.1 partners actively participated in the ROOTS Policy Group by contributing to the published position paper of the initiative, and as co-organisers at the dedicated Policy Conference that took place in Brussels at the European Committee of the Regions on 2022 September.
A Communication and Dissemination Plan was created, as well as a Dissemination Package. Information on the Interest Network was provided. Project workshops related to the implementation of the pilots were held. The project has joined the European CE Stakeholder Platform, the EuBioNet, and the Advisory Board was promoted on the project website. A three-pronged strategy has been implemented with equal emphasis on communication, dissemination, and participation activities.Relevant awareness-raising is being continuously promoted. The use of audio-visual teasers to raise public interest is also proving successful. Regular posting on dozens of LinkedIn and Facebook groups has also contributed to improving citizens' perception of BUs as a local resource and increasing their active participation in the selective sorting of bio-waste. "Ethical requirements" were established to ensure compliance in the first period.
In this period, the activities leading to the validation of the technical and economic feasibility of the proposed TRL 7 objective have been carried out.
PILOT 1: Has reached a TRL 7 for gelatine production out from fish subproducts satisfactorily. It is expected to reach TRL 7 for hydrolysed collagen in the following weeks. Meat subproduct trials have been proved at TRL4. It will reach TRL 7 in the following months. Fermentation and polyphenols and oils extraction will achieve TRL 6 in the next months. Blood has been proven at TRL 7. Quality tests on products are being held by NS and ADM.
PILOT 2: Has reached successfully TRL 7 for SCG oil extraction. Market destinations for coffee oil have failed to give a good ratio of production cost/to market price. Is working on improving yields and searching for more valuable coffee oil applications in different market sectors.
PILOT 3: Will achieve TRL 7 in the following months. Economic and environmental sustainability assessments will be done as well. New residues and products from PILOT 1 will be tried such as exhausted meat subproducts, different SCG subproducts from oil and polyphenol extraction, and hydrolysed blood.
PILOT 4: For restaurant oils (Pilot 4A) TRL 7 has been achieved. For coffee oil (Pilot 4B) TRL 6 has been reached, and TRL 7 is expected in the next months. Both processes will study its economical and sustainable feasibility in the following months. Also, analyse its biobased polyester quality and its possible applications.
PILOT 5: Has demonstrated bioethanol production at lab-scale and starts TRL 7 optimizations for reaching a 15% solid content, as expressed in DoA. Economic viability has been studied and will continue in the next period.
PILOT 6: Has demonstrated at demo scale the production of bioethanol from paper and cardboard. It will scale up to TRL 7 in the next period and an economic assessment will be elaborated.
PILOT 7: Has reached TRL 7 for biochar production and has field trials evidencing its benefits. An economic viability assessment shows inefficiency, due to the energy costs and process timings. Will be studied more in detail in the following months. More field trials are going to be held.
