WDM Optical Phase-modulated Radio-over-Fiber Systems

Final Report Summary - WOPROF (WDM Optical Phase-modulated Radio-over-Fiber Systems)

Speed, reliability and access everywhere are crucial qualifiers for information distribution. Therefore to provide both high capacity and flexibility, the transport of wireless and wire line signals is converging into a common telecommunication infrastructure. Therefore an important goal of the WOPROF project is to theoretically and experimentally study the transmission performance of phase modulated Radio-over-fibre (ROF) multi-channel transmission systems http://www.woprof.fotonik.dtu.dk.

One important feature of phase modulated ROF systems is their robust transmission, high spectral efficiency and high dynamic range properties, not achievable by conventional intensity modulated systems.

During the project implementation period, we have theoretically analysed and compared the performance of phase modulated and intensity modulated ROF links, and studied the reception technologies. The performance of several phase modulated 60GHz ROF links have been analysed and compared. In addition, we have also successfully demonstrated an experimental optical phase-modulated radio-over-fibre link with k-means algorithm for digital demodulation of 8PSK subcarrier multiplexed signals. Moreover, we have experimentally demonstrated some convergence transmission experiments on the transmission of broadband wire line services and high speed wireless signals. These achievements completely reach the main goal of the WOPROF project-multi-channel phase modulated radio-over-fibre optical links for the transmission wireless and wire line signals.

Besides the achievements above, Ultrawideband (UWB) wireless systems have been identified as an exciting new wireless technology (similar to Bluetooth) for short range in-home applications transferring data up to 5 Gbps. In summary, our exceptional results both in wireless links and in particular IR-UWB are becoming worldwide acknowledged and has put myself and my host institution (DTU) as one of the world leaders in the field of UWB communication research. This is recognised by our numerous publications and particularly invited talks on this topic.
