The project ALUHEAT will develop new technologies based on new materials and novel electromagnetic design. The technology is based on the ability of superconductors to carry DC currents loss-free and ALUHEAT will show how this ability can be combined with novel electromagnetic concepts to fully utilise the potential of the superconductor materials. The overall objective of ALUHEAT is to make the breakthroughs necessary to introduce a novel energy saving technology in life-cycle optimised devices for indu strial production as well as in other sectors. More specifically the objectives of ALUHEAT are: - To develop technology to dramatically reduce energy consumption and thereby the life-cycle costs in one of the large-scale electrotechnical components with absolutely poorest energy efficiency. - To validate the technical and economical feasibility of the new concept by building a 200-300 kW aluminium billet induction heater and test it in an industrial aluminium extrusion plant. - To develop new technolo gies to be used to facilitate the introduction of superconductor technologies. The project is configured in seven workpackages (WPs). WP1 Problem analysis and WP2 System conception and technical specification address preparative research that orients t he forthcoming activities. Basic and technology oriented research are carried out in WP3 Development, design and construction. In this workpackage parallel development in materials science, electromagnetic design, mechanical engineering, cooling technolo gy and production technology will take place. The different sciences will contribute to building a functional model of a superconductor based induction heater. Thereafter the new induction heater concept is validated in WP4 Laboratory testing and WP5 Pla nt performance assessment. WP6 Dissemination and exploitation of the results aims at fully utilise the research results. The project management constitutes WP7.
