Deliverables
A gridded data product will be constructed for Europe based on the homogenised EUSTACE station surface air temperature datasets The gridded homogenised datasets will be made available on CEMS Task 12
A consistent set of air temperature fields and uncertainties across all surfacesAs an input to the statistical infilling Task 23 and as part of a sustainable system air temperature datasets will be created based on the best available inputs that are produced in a consistent fashion and which have ancillary information such as surface type Task 22
Homogenised daily LSAT, with reportTo ensure a stable record existing homogenisation methods will be examined as to whether or not they are fit for purpose The methods will be evaluated using benchmark datasets and will be compared for a few locations with results from more advanced techniques eg Auchmann and Brnnimann 2012 which need information that is not typically available and hence can only be applied for selected locations Homogenised station data for Europe will be delivered and a report written Task 12
Final, verified products delivered to CEMS for disseminationThe main outputs from WP2 are a set of state-of-the-art products that meet the product design specifications defined in Task 2.1. The products will be made available to CEMS after validation by WP3 (Task 2.5).
Uncertainties added to satellite datasets in CEMSEUSTACE will produce a set of multiyear satellite surface skin temperature records with consistent uncertainties for all surfaces of the Earth Task 13
Global LSAT dataset with discontinuities identified where possibleThree break detection methods will be applied to the global GHCNDaily data which will allow assessment of regions for which the break detection methodology works This assessment will be reported to WP2 and WP3 GHCDDaily data with break points identified where feasible together with an estimate of uncertainty will be delivered Task 12
External project websiteThe URL of the public facing project website will be released Task 42
An additional validation of the EUSTACE surface air temperature product FULLSTACE is proposed which tests and demonstrates an aspect of its scientific usefulness. A key use for the product is as a driver for local models of a range of environmental processes of interest, to explore how centennial-scale changes in SAT may have modified those processes. This task will validate the product for such an application, in this case, using the product to understand and estimate multi-decadal change in lake surface water temperature (LSWT), testing both the ability for the SAT product to drive changes in the decadal-scale mean LSWT (testing the long-term changes represented in the product) and decadal-scale changes in higher order statistics (testing the variability in the analysis over time). This will benefit the air temperature analysis team within the project, by giving feedback on the applicability of their product. A planned scientific paper will benefit the limnological community and alert them to the possible uses of the EUSTACE analysis, fostering rapid uptake of the products in by an active international science community. Task T3.3b (addition to T3.3) (UoR) Tune a simulation of LSWT dependence on surface air temperature using satellite-era LSWT observations for >500 lakes and the FULLSTACE over that period (prepare tuning using June trial version). Apply tuned model for entire EUSTACE period. Compare to 100 year lake time series (not used in creating the product, available for 2 lakes) and multi-decadal lake observations (available for about 20 lakes), testing the correlation of observations and simulation on a variety of timescales, and assessing the degree of temporal consistency of observed and simulated mean and variability statistics. On basis of results (1) interpret the usefulness of the product as a means to simulate LSWT change on centennial scales, and (2) consider what the simulations imply about changes in lakes through the 20th Century
Validation report for the final in-filled EUSTACE surface air temperature productA report will be written detailing the validation against reference data of the final infilled EUSTACE surface air temperature product (from T2.5) (Task 3.3).
Validation report for the intermediate fields inferred from retrievalsA report will be written on the validation against reference data of intermediate surface air temperature fields inferred from retrievals test dataset Version 2 MS8 Task 33
Report on User WorkshopA formal report will be written summarising the aims and outcomes from the user interaction workshop scheduled for Month 20 MS36 Task 41
Intercomparison report for the final in-filled EUSTACE surface air temperature productA report will be written detailing the comparison to other surface air temperature datasets of the final infilled EUSTACE product (from T2.5) (Task 3.2).
User requirement specification (for other work packages)A user requirements specification will be developed including essential and desirable requirements and provide feedback to the other work packages based on the workshop and literature review Task 41
Paper submitted for peer-review on overall EUSTACE project and key findingsAll project partners will contribute to a set of scientific and technical papers to be published in peer-reviewed literature. There is a very specific plan to submit a paper towards the end of the project that will describe the overall EUSTACE project and its key findings (Task 4.2).
Validation report for surface temperature uncertaintiesA report will be written detailing the validation against reference data of the satellite data uncertainties D13 Task 33
Short report on availability of regular updates to source datasets, with recommendations as to alternative data sources if neededThere will be a short report discussing the availability of regular updates to source data sets If regular updates are not available recommendations will be made as to alternative data sources to consider for the purposes of continuation of the products after the lifetime of the project Task 11
Final version of user guidesUser guides will contain all of the necessary information needed in order to make maximum use of any of the EUSTACE products (Task 4.2).
Observation Integration: Auxiliary data to support lake influence in SAT analysisRelationship building activities on linking lake surface water and surface air temperature have clarified (1) that some fraction of co-variability can likely be modelled historically prior to available LSWT data within the analysis, and (2) that there is a region of influence of lake on SAT that we wish to take basic account of that goes beyond the lake area (not just “over lakes” in the case of large lakes), and that this region cannot be defined only from available data. Therefore an additional simulation-driven deliverable of information quantifying the region of influence of LSWT on SAT and how it relates to LSWT/SAT anomalies is proposed. Task T1.4b (addition to T1.4) (Met Office) Undertake simulations of daily-resolved SAT using the PRECIS regional climate model for Lake Victoria, using prescribed LSWT from UoR, at 25km resolution which is sufficient to inform the 0.25 degree analysis of SAT daily minimum and maximum. (UoR) Undertake simulations of daily-resolved SAT using openIFS for Lake Victoria and >12 relevant very large lakes, using prescribed LSWT, at a resolution sufficient to inform the 0.25 degree analysis of SAT daily minimum and maximum. (UoR) Formulate outputs of the above into the spatial patterns and temporal coefficients described in D1.5 as useful to represent lake effects in the EUSTACE analysis.
Report on common approach to estimating uncertainties across all surfacesThis report will document the common approach adopted towards estimating the uncertainty of all the satellite input data using techniques such as simplified simulation of published retrieval processes Task 13
Intercomparison report for the intermediate fields inferred from retrievalsA report will be written comparing the intermediate fields inferred from retrievals test dataset Version 2 MS8 to other surface air temperature data sets Task 32
Report on the relationship between satellite surface skin temperature and surface air temperature observationsThis report will describe the derived relationships between satellite surface skin temperature observations and surface air temperature observations for land lakes ocean sea ice and ice sheets Task 14
Connection to other data services (including ESGF, OpenDap and other relevant services) will increase the accessibility to the data and thus forms an important role in the dissemination and exploitation of EUSTACE results (Task 4.3).
